Dishwasher detergent was probably one of my last product switches in our household. I just couldn’t wrap my head around switches to a different product for some reason.

Over the course of three years we slowly upgraded our detergent from the most toxic to least toxic. I guess inching my way towards something better, weary of what the outcome might be.

We were first tried and true Cascade users, until we switched to Seventh Generation, then eventually switched to ECOS gel, and now I make my own!

And I am amazed at the results.. Why did I wait so long… I not only am saving a boatload and using cleaner ingredients, but I didn’t compromise on the outcome after a wash. They’re sparkle clean!

The recipe I use:

1 cup Borax (much cheaper at Walmart, just linked to show what I use)

1 cup washing soda

1/2 cup salt (I use real salt, you could use another kind, just the finer the better)

1/2 cup citric acid

Use about 1 Tbsp. per wash

I actually doubled this recipe to fill my 1/2 gallon glass jar, and repurposed and old scooper I had.

I did a test run video over on my instagram if you want to check that out in my highlights.

If you’re also someone who’s looking to switch to cleaner but don’t have the time element of making your own, check out my kitchen guide where I have a whole list of non toxic dishwasher detergents to try!
